Digital radiography provides instant, high-quality diagnostic images that reveal fractures, foreign objects, organ abnormalities, chest disease, and numerous conditions that are invisible from the outside. Digital technology means superior image quality, immediate results, and the ability to manipulate images for better diagnostic accuracy.
At Vet HQ, we interpret studies in-house and discuss findings clearly, beginning treatment promptly when appropriate. For complex cases, we can transmit images electronically to external specialist radiologists for expert interpretation while you wait.

At Vet HQ, our veterinarians hold advanced qualifications in imaging, enabling them to provide experienced interpretation of radiographic studies. We review hundreds of radiographs monthly, developing pattern recognition that catches subtle abnormalities others might miss.
You’ll see the images during your appointment, understand what they show, and discuss next steps immediately rather than waiting days for reports from external facilities. For urgent cases, such as suspected foreign body obstruction or breathing difficulty, we radiograph and interpret immediately – that speed matters enormously when every hour counts.
Complex cases or subtle findings often benefit from review by a board-certified veterinary radiologist. We can transmit images electronically for external specialist interpretation, typically receiving detailed reports within 24 to 48 hours.
This collaborative approach combines our immediate assessment with external specialist expertise, leveraging additional input to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning. You’re not waiting weeks for external specialist appointments – we obtain expert interpretation while your pet continues receiving care from our team.
Digital radiography uses minimal radiation doses compared to older film-based systems. Exposure time is brief (fractions of a second per image). We utilise proper positioning and technique to obtain diagnostic-quality images with the minimum number of exposures necessary.
Most pets tolerate radiography easily with calm, experienced handling from our team. Sedation is sometimes necessary if positioning would cause discomfort or if the pet is too anxious to remain still; however, many radiographic studies can be completed with awake patients.

Best Vet Clinic! Oh My Gosh, I owe these guys everything, if it wasn’t for this clinic, I wouldn’t have my WylieCat anymore.
My cat fell out a window, 6 storeys down to concrete, & although he didn’t break bones, he broke his insides, especially his liver. The dedication of care…
Thank you to Jess and the team for looking after our Winnie. Always take extra care and attention. Jess truely listens and takes consideration. Appreciate it.
We had a seriously wonderful experience here. The team is so friendly, thorough in their explanations for their care, and knowledgeable. I so appreciate a doctor taking the time to educate me as an owner; there’s no better feeling than being an informed decision maker and owner. Our golden retriever, Leo, had the best care…

Usually within the hour, often sooner. We perform examinations, develop digital images instantly, interpret the results, and discuss the findings during your appointment. This allows same-day diagnosis and treatment decisions without anxious waits for reports. For complex cases that require a external specialist radiologist’s review, reports typically arrive within 24-48 hours.
Many radiographic studies are completed with awake patients using calm handling from our experienced team. Sedation becomes necessary if positioning would cause pain (such as manipulating fractured limbs), if the pet is too anxious to remain still, or if specific positioning requirements can’t be achieved safely without sedation. We assess each case individually.
We avoid radiographing pregnant animals unless medically essential, particularly during early pregnancy when developing fetuses are most sensitive to radiation. When radiographs are necessary despite pregnancy, we use minimal exposures and careful shielding. Alternative diagnostics, like ultrasound, are preferred when they provide adequate information.
No. Radiographs excel at showing bones, metallic foreign objects, air patterns, and the size/shape of organs. They cannot reveal soft tissue details, organ function, many types of foreign objects (such as plastic, wood, and fabric), or blood vessel abnormalities. Conditions requiring detailed soft tissue evaluation typically necessitate the use of ultrasound, CT, or MRI. We’ll recommend the appropriate imaging based on the investigation.
At Vet HQ, we discuss all findings honestly, including incidental discoveries unrelated to your initial concern. Sometimes, radiographs reveal conditions that require additional investigation or treatment. We present our findings, discuss the implications, recommend suitable next steps, and provide cost estimates for any further diagnostics or treatment that may be required.
Digital radiography provides superior image quality, instant results, the ability to manipulate images for better visualisation, and significantly reduced radiation exposure compared to film-based systems. Images can be easily shared electronically with external specialists or referral centres when needed. Digital technology represents a genuine advancement in diagnostic imaging.
