Accurate Diagnosis, Appropriate Management

Heart disease in pets ranges from manageable murmurs to severe conditions requiring careful ongoing treatment. Our cardiology service combines advanced diagnostic equipment with clinical expertise to diagnose cardiac conditions accurately and manage them effectively over time.

We detect valve disease, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, and congenital defects affecting dogs and cats. Early detection matters enormously – many cardiac conditions progress slowly when properly managed, but deteriorate rapidly when left unaddressed or inadequately treated.

Our Cardiology Capabilities

In-House Diagnostics:

  • Thorough cardiac auscultation and physical examination
  • Electrocardiography (ECG) to assess heart rhythm and electrical activity
  • Digital chest radiography to evaluate heart size and detect lung changes
  • Echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) performed by our imaging-qualified veterinarians
  • Blood pressure measurement

Collaborative External Specialist Model:

For complex cardiac cases, Vet HQ will consult a cardiologist who visits our practice on a regular basis. This allows your pet to receive a board-certified cardiology evaluation in familiar surroundings, with our team present throughout. You maintain continuity with veterinarians who understand your pet’s complete medical history, supported by external specialist expertise when it improves outcomes.

Common Cardiac Conditions We Manage

Degenerative Valve Disease (Mitral Valve Disease):

The most common cardiac condition in dogs, particularly small breeds and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Causes progressive heart murmurs as valve leaflets thicken and fail to close completely. Many dogs live comfortably for years with appropriate medication and monitoring.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy:

Heart muscle weakening affecting large breed dogs. Causes reduced pumping efficiency and often arrhythmias. Requires careful medication management and regular monitoring.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy:

Heart muscle thickening, most common in cats. Can cause sudden collapse or breathing difficulty. Requires specific medications and stress minimisation.

Arrhythmias:

Abnormal heart rhythms ranging from benign to life-threatening. ECG monitoring identifies the specific arrhythmia type, guiding appropriate treatment decisions.

Long-Term Management

Heart disease rarely resolves—it requires ongoing management including appropriate medications, regular monitoring, lifestyle modifications, and honest conversations about prognosis and quality of life.

What Long-Term Management Involves:

  • Medication to improve heart function and reduce fluid accumulation
  • Regular recheck examinations (frequency depends on disease severity)
  • Repeat diagnostic testing to monitor disease progression
  • Medication adjustments based on clinical response
  • Clear guidance about symptoms requiring urgent attention
  • Realistic discussions about prognosis at each stage

Prognosis Varies Significantly

Some cardiac patients live comfortably for years with appropriate treatment. Others progress more rapidly despite intervention. Prognosis depends on:

  • Specific cardiac disease type
  • Severity at diagnosis
  • Individual response to medications
  • Presence of concurrent health conditions
  • Development of complications

We provide realistic prognostic information at diagnosis and update it as we monitor your pet’s response to treatment. This allows you to make informed decisions about care intensity and quality of life considerations throughout your pet’s disease course.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Contact us immediately if your pet experiences:

  • Sudden collapse or weakness
  • Laboured breathing or open-mouth breathing in cats
  • Coughing that worsens or prevents rest
  • Blue-tinged gums or tongue
  • Severe lethargy or inability to stand

These symptoms may indicate heart failure decompensation or serious arrhythmias requiring immediate intervention. During our opening hours (until 7pm, 7 days a week), we can provide an urgent assessment. After hours, we coordinate transfer to emergency services equipped for critical cardiac care.

Best Vet Clinic! Oh My Gosh, I owe these guys everything, if it wasn’t for this clinic, I wouldn’t have my WylieCat anymore.
My cat fell out a window, 6 storeys down to concrete, & although he didn’t break bones, he broke his insides, especially his liver. The dedication of care…

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

What are signs of heart disease in pets?

Common signs include coughing (especially at night or after excitement), difficulty breathing, reduced exercise tolerance, fainting episodes, decreased appetite, and lethargy. However, some pets show no obvious symptoms until the disease is advanced, which is why wellness examinations and pre-anaesthetic screening are essential for early detection.

How do you diagnose heart disease?

At Vet HQ, we use physical examination to detect murmurs or abnormal rhythms, ECG to assess electrical activity, chest radiographs to evaluate heart size and check for lung changes, and echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) to visualise heart structure and function directly. This comprehensive approach distinguishes between different cardiac diseases, guiding appropriate treatment.

Do I need to see a cardiologist?

Many cardiac cases can be managed by our team using in-house diagnostics and established treatment protocols. For complex cases, newly diagnosed severe disease, or pets not responding to initial treatment, we recommend consultation with our visiting cardiologist who assesses pets at our practice. Your pet remains in our care while undergoing external cardiac evaluation and receiving personalised treatment recommendations.

Can heart disease be treated?

Heart disease can rarely be cured, but it can often be managed successfully with medications that improve heart function, reduce fluid accumulation, and maintain quality of life. Many pets live comfortably for months to years with appropriate treatment and monitoring. Prognosis varies significantly depending on the disease type and severity.

How often does my pet need monitoring?

The monitoring frequency depends on the disease severity and stability. Newly diagnosed patients often need rechecks every 1-3 months initially. Stable patients on established treatment may be considered for an extended interval of every 3-6 months. We adjust monitoring frequency based on your pet’s response to treatment and any changes in clinical signs.

What's different about your cardiology service?

We combine advanced diagnostic capabilities with continuity of care. Your pet’s cardiac disease is managed by veterinarians who know their complete medical history, understand your family situation, and communicate clearly at every stage. When external specialist cardiology consultation benefits outcomes, we bring the specialist to our practice rather than sending your pet to unfamiliar referral centres. This approach reduces stress while providing appropriate expertise.
