Keyhole Surgery (Laparoscopy)

Minimally Invasive Surgery, Meaningful Benefits

Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery performs major procedures through incisions smaller than your fingertip. Using advanced camera systems and specialised instruments, we access abdominal structures with minimal tissue trauma. Pets experience less pain, smaller scars, and often faster initial recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

We perform laparoscopic ovary-sparing desexing, prophylactic gastropexy (stomach tacking to prevent bloat), retained testicle removal in cryptorchid dogs, and diagnostic procedures. Most pets go home the same day, returning to comfortable activity within days rather than weeks.

How Laparoscopy Works

We create 2-3 small ports (5-10mm) in the abdominal wall, insert a camera providing magnified visualisation of internal structures, and use advanced instruments to perform surgery with precision. Carbon dioxide gas creates working space inside the abdomen, allowing us to navigate and operate effectively.

The magnified camera view allows more precise surgery than possible with open techniques. We can see fine anatomical details, carefully preserve blood supply to surrounding structures, and perform delicate procedures with minimal collateral tissue damage.

Procedures We Perform Laparoscopically

Ovary-Sparing Desexing:

Removes the uterus while preserving the ovaries, preventing pregnancy while maintaining hormonal benefits for bone health and development. Particularly suitable for large breed dogs where early desexing raises orthopaedic concerns.

Prophylactic Gastropexy:

Surgically attaches the stomach to the body wall, preventing life-threatening gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat). Recommended for deep-chested large breeds at high risk: Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, and similar breeds. Can be performed during desexing procedures.

Cryptorchid Testicle Removal:

Locates and removes retained testicles in dogs where one or both testicles haven’t descended normally. The keyhole approach causes less pain than traditional open abdominal surgery.

Diagnostic Laparoscopy:

Visualises abdominal organs directly, obtains biopsies, and investigates disease when other diagnostics haven’t provided definitive answers.

Realistic Recovery Expectations

Recovery from laparoscopic surgery is generally more comfortable than open surgery, but it’s still surgery requiring appropriate healing time and activity restriction.

Typical Recovery:

  • Most pets go home the same-day with pain medication
  • Comfortable movement usually within 24-48 hours
  • Activity restriction for 7-14 days (no running, jumping, rough play)
  • Gradual return to regular activity over 2-3 weeks
  • Suture removal at 10-14 days

“Within days” doesn’t mean immediate normal activity. It means your pet feels comfortable moving around the house, eating normally, and showing personality. Full unrestricted activity still requires appropriate healing time.

Not Suitable for All Cases

Keyhole surgery has limitations. We can’t perform it effectively in:

  • Very small dogs or cats (limited abdominal space)
  • Extremely large dogs (size constraints on equipment)
  • Cases requiring extensive tissue removal
  • Patients with significant abdominal adhesions from previous surgery
  • Emergency situations requiring rapid open access

Traditional open surgery remains necessary and appropriate for many cases. We’ll discuss honestly whether keyhole surgery offers genuine advantages for your pet’s specific situation, or whether traditional surgery provides better outcomes.

Cost Considerations

Laparoscopic surgery costs more than traditional open surgery due to advanced equipment, additional training requirements, and longer surgical times. The investment offers genuine benefits, including less pain, smaller incisions, and often a faster recovery; however, the cost difference is significant.

We provide estimates for both traditional and laparoscopic approaches when both are viable options, helping you make informed decisions based on your pet’s needs and your financial circumstances.

Best Vet Clinic! Oh My Gosh, I owe these guys everything, if it wasn’t for this clinic, I wouldn’t have my WylieCat anymore.
My cat fell out a window, 6 storeys down to concrete, & although he didn’t break bones, he broke his insides, especially his liver. The dedication of care…

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

Is keyhole surgery available at both locations?

Laparoscopic surgery is performed at Double Bay. The advanced equipment and surgical team for these procedures are based at our Double Bay practice.

What's the actual recovery difference between keyhole and open surgery?

Keyhole surgery typically results in less post-operative pain, allowing more comfortable movement within 24-48 hours. Traditional open surgery often causes more initial discomfort for 3-5 days. However, both approaches require similar activity restriction periods (7-14 days) for internal healing. The primary difference is the comfort level during early recovery, rather than the total healing time required.

Can all abdominal surgeries be done laparoscopically?

No. Many abdominal surgeries still require traditional open approaches for safe, complete treatment. Extensive tumour removal, complex intestinal surgery, and emergency cases typically need open surgery. Laparoscopy is most effective for specific procedures where minimal-access techniques offer genuine advantages without compromising surgical goals.

How much more does keyhole surgery cost?

Laparoscopic procedures typically cost 30-50% more than equivalent open surgeries, reflecting advanced equipment, additional training, and extended surgical times. We provide detailed estimates for both approaches when discussing your pet’s procedure, allowing you to weigh the benefits against the additional cost.

Is laparoscopic surgery safer than traditional surgery?

Both approaches are safe when performed by experienced surgeons with appropriate monitoring. Laparoscopic surgery reduces certain risks (such as incision-related complications) but introduces others (such as carbon dioxide-related issues). Overall complication rates are similar. The primary advantages are reduced pain and smaller incisions, not necessarily improved safety.

My dog is anxious - will keyhole surgery be less stressful?

The surgery itself (whether keyhole or open) occurs under general anaesthesia, so your dog won’t experience stress during the procedure. The benefit for anxious dogs is potentially a more comfortable recovery, as smaller incisions typically cause less post-operative discomfort. However, the pre-operative stress (travel, hospital environment, separation from you) is similar for both surgical approaches.
