Velli, a six-month-old Staffordshire Terrier, came to Vet HQ Darlinghurst when his owners noticed he had become unusually lethargic and was no longer interested in his food.
What started as a quiet morning had quickly become concerning. For 24 hours, this typically energetic puppy had barely moved. He wasn’t playing, wasn’t eating, and seemed completely unlike himself.
His worried owners knew something was seriously wrong. Young dogs, especially active breeds like Staffordshire Bull Terriers, don’t simply stop eating without reason. They brought Velli straight to our clinic, hoping we could discover what was affecting their beloved puppy.
During the physical examination, Drs Elena Mitchell and Jessica Green found that Velli was dehydrated and unusually quiet for a young Staffordshire Terrier. His vitals were stable, and he had no fever; however, his clinical presentation suggested that something significant was happening internally. Blood tests revealed elevated kidney and liver values, along with mild anaemia.
A urine test showed glucosuria, an abnormal finding that raised immediate concern. Elena suspected leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection that can cause kidney and liver damage. A PCR test was sent immediately. The results confirmed the diagnosis. Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal disease, it is Zoonotic also so can spread to people, but with prompt intensive treatment, recovery is possible.
We recommended immediate hospitalisation with aggressive fluid therapy and targeted antibiotic treatment. Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver, making intravenous fluids essential to flush the bacterial toxins from Velli’s system and support organ function. Before starting treatment, we explained to Velli’s owners that he would need at least four days of continuous care in our hospital ward.
Our comprehensive approach included round-the-clock intravenous fluid therapy, antibiotics specifically chosen to combat leptospirosis, anti-nausea medication to encourage eating, and pain relief to keep him comfortable. Throughout his stay, our nursing team closely monitored his hydration status, kidney function, and overall comfort.
During Velli’s hospitalisation, our veterinary nursing team provided continuous supportive care in our dedicated ward. Intravenous fluids ran constantly, carefully calculated to match his hydration needs and support his compromised kidneys. The antibiotic protocol targeted the leptospira bacteria while our team monitored for any adverse reactions.
Anti-nausea medication helped settle his stomach, and pain relief ensured his comfort throughout the recovery process. Velli’s owners received twice daily updates on his progress, including details about his fluid intake, urination output, and energy levels. Our nurses spent time with Velli regularly, offering gentle reassurance and monitoring his response to treatment. The consistent care and close observation were crucial to his recovery. As the disease is contractable by people, we treated Velli in out isolation unit with a full PPE kit needed.
“Our nurses spent time with Velli regularly albeit it covered head to toe in protection, ensuring he felt safe and comfortable while his body fought the infection.” – Vet HQ Team
Recovery involved four days of intensive intravenous therapy in the hospital, followed by careful monitoring at home. Velli’s owners played a crucial role by carefully following discharge instructions and monitoring for any signs of relapse. By day five, the transformation was remarkable. Velli was eating enthusiastically, well hydrated, and showing his playful Staffie personality again.
We scheduled a recheck appointment a few days after discharge to ensure he maintained his hydration levels and appetite. Our team provided detailed guidance about monitoring for any concerning signs, including lethargy, reduced appetite, or changes to his drinking and urination patterns. Velli’s blood values would need rechecking to confirm his organs had recovered fully.
Today, Velli is thriving. His owners report that he has returned to his energetic, mischievous self, playing and eating with the enthusiasm expected of a young Staffordshire Terrier. His follow-up blood tests showed his kidney and liver values had returned to normal ranges, confirming complete recovery from the infection.
His owners were incredibly grateful for the comprehensive care and clear communication they received throughout Velli’s hospitalisation. At Vet HQ Darlinghurst, we continue to see Velli for his routine puppy vaccinations and wellness checks, celebrating his remarkable recovery and helping him grow into a healthy adult dog.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that affects the kidneys and liver, spread through contaminated water or soil, from infected rat urine. Dogs can contract it by drinking from puddles, swimming in contaminated water, or simply walking through affected areas. It’s more common in urban environments and wet conditions. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are essential, as the disease can progress rapidly and cause severe organ damage if left untreated.
Yes, absolutely. We provide emergency and intensive care for dogs with leptospirosis from across the inner city, including Surry Hills, Redfern, Paddington, Potts Point, and the CBD. Our Darlinghurst clinic has a fully equipped hospital ward for patients requiring multi-day intensive treatment. We offer 24-hour monitoring capabilities and experienced nursing staff trained in managing serious bacterial infections and supporting kidney function during recovery.
Treatment costs vary depending on the severity of infection and the length of hospitalisation required. Most cases need four to seven days of intensive intravenous therapy, along with medications and diagnostic testing. During your initial consultation, we provide a detailed estimate covering hospitalisation, fluids, antibiotics, supportive medications, and follow-up blood tests. We work with all major pet insurance providers and offer GapOnly® to help make urgent treatment accessible when your dog needs it most.
Early signs include sudden lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and increased thirst or urination. Some dogs develop fever, muscle pain, or reluctance to move. Because symptoms can appear suddenly and progress quickly, it’s important to seek veterinary care immediately if your dog appears unwell. Dogs that swim in natural water sources, live in urban areas with rat populations, or spend time outdoors after heavy rainfall are at a higher risk and should be monitored closely.
Yes, there’s a vaccine that protects against the most common strains of leptospirosis. We strongly recommend it for dogs living in urban areas, those who swim in natural water sources, or any dog with potential exposure to contaminated environments. The vaccine requires an initial two-dose series followed by annual boosters. While no vaccine is 100% effective, it significantly reduces the risk of infection and severity of disease. We can discuss whether the leptospirosis vaccine is appropriate for your dog during any wellness visit.
