Remi’s Journey: From Painful Overbite to Perfect Dental Health

The Challenge: Hidden Pain Behind a Happy Face

Remi, a 1-year-old dog, came to Vet HQ Double Bay for a routine check-up when his mum noticed his breath wasn’t quite fresh and he seemed sensitive on one side of his mouth. During the examination, Dr Geoff Golovsky discovered something important. Remi had a subtle overbite, where his top teeth sat in front of his bottom teeth.

While this might seem minor, the lower right canine was impinging directly on his gum, causing mouth pain. This discomfort meant Remi wasn’t using the right side of his mouth properly. The result was significant plaque accumulation on those teeth, leading to gingivitis and the early stages of periodontal disease in such a young dog.

The diagnosis: Bite Discrepancy Causing Secondary Dental Disease

Dr Geoff performed a thorough oral examination and explained to Remi’s mum that the overbite was creating a cascade of problems. The misaligned canine was causing constant trauma to the gum tissue, which was painful and inflamed. Because Remi was avoiding chewing on that side, plaque and tartar were building up rapidly on the right teeth. Left untreated, this would lead to serious periodontal disease, tooth loss, and ongoing pain.

The good news was that Remi was young, and the issue was caught early. Dr Geoff recommended dental X-rays under anaesthesia to assess whether the tooth could be safely modified rather than extracted or require a root canal.

The Treatment Plan: Precise Crown Reduction and Dental Care

We recommended a comprehensive approach that would address both the bite discrepancy and the existing dental disease. Under general anaesthesia, we would take detailed X-rays of the lower right canine to measure the pulp cavity and determine how much crown could be safely removed. The goal was to reduce the tooth height just enough to eliminate the gum impingement while preserving the tooth’s vitality.

Our treatment plan included:

  • Full dental X-rays of the lower right canine
  • Precise crown reduction if measurements allowed
  • Complete scale and polish to remove existing plaque and tartar
  • Gum treatment for gingivitis
  • Long-term prevention plan

Before the procedure, Remi received a thorough pre-anaesthetic health check including blood tests in house to ensure he was a strong candidate for the dental work.

The Procedure: Millimetre-Perfect Dental Modification

During the procedure, Dr Geoff carefully took X-rays of tooth 404, the lower right canine. The measurements were critical. The pulp cavity measured 2.7mm from the tip of the crown. This meant we could safely remove 2mm of crown height without exposing the sensitive pulp chamber. Using a precision cutting burr, Dr Geoff carefully removed exactly 2mm from the crown tip. He then smoothed and softened the edges with a round burr to create a comfortable, natural contour.

With the bite issue corrected, the team performed a complete scale and polish to remove all the accumulated plaque and treat the inflamed gums. Throughout the procedure, Remi’s vitals were monitored constantly, and he remained comfortable and stable under anaesthesia.

Recovery: Immediate Relief and Fresh Kisses

Remi’s recovery was excellent. He woke comfortably from anaesthesia and went home the same day with pain relief and detailed aftercare instructions. His mum noticed the difference immediately. Remi was no longer sensitive when eating, and he started using both sides of his mouth equally.

The gum inflammation resolved quickly now that the constant trauma had been eliminated. Within days, Remi’s mouth felt so much better that he was back to giving enthusiastic kisses, and his mum was delighted to report they were always fresh. Dr Geoff scheduled Remi for our Grade 1 Dental Prophylaxis Program, which includes dental checks every six months and professional cleaning under anaesthesia when needed to prevent future problems.

The Outcome: Healthy Teeth and Happy Smiles for Life

Today, Remi is thriving under the care of Dr Geoff at Vet HQ Double Bay. His dental health is in top condition, with no pain, no inflammation, and excellent oral hygiene. His mum shared, “Remi has been seeing Dr Geoff at Vet HQ in Double Bay for 2 years. Under his care, we have managed multiple tummy issues and improved Remi’s dental health and hygiene. He had a slight overbite with a tooth impacting his bite, causing his gum to be inflamed.

Dr Geoff took X-rays to ensure we could modify the tooth that was impacting his bite. Since then, Remi has been pleased, and his dental health is in good shape. So, the kisses (licks) to mum and dad are always fresh.”

Remi continues his preventative dental program, ensuring his teeth stay healthy for years to come.

FAQs: Dog Dental Treatment in Sydney

What causes overbite problems in young dogs?

Overbites in dogs can be genetic, developmental, or result from retained baby teeth that interfere with proper jaw growth. In some cases, the misalignment is subtle but causes the lower teeth to impact the upper gum tissue, leading to pain, inflammation, and difficulty eating. Early detection during puppy check-ups allows us to monitor jaw development and intervene when necessary. At Vet HQ, we conduct thorough oral examinations at every visit to detect these issues before they become serious problems.

Does Vet HQ Double Bay provide dental treatment for dogs from Bondi, Bellevue Hill, Darling Point, Point Piper, Rose Bay, Woollahra, and Bondi Junction?

Yes, we proudly treat dogs with dental issues from across the Eastern Suburbs, including Rose Bay, Woollahra, Bondi Junction, Bellevue Hill, and Point Piper. Our Double Bay clinic is equipped with digital dental X-ray technology, precision dental equipment, and a comfortable surgical suite for all dental procedures. From routine cleanings to complex bite corrections, we provide comprehensive dental care that keeps your dog’s mouth healthy and pain-free close to home.

How much does dog dental treatment cost at Vet HQ?

Dental treatment costs vary depending on the complexity of the case, whether X-rays are needed, and the extent of dental disease present. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed and transparent estimate that covers anesthesia, X-rays, the procedure itself, and any follow-up care required. We work with all major pet insurance providers and offer GapOnly® to help make dental treatment accessible and stress-free for your family.

What does recovery look like after dental surgery for dogs?

Most dogs recover quickly from dental procedures and go home the same day. We provide pain relief medication and recommend soft foods for the first few days while the mouth heals. Many dogs feel immediate relief once painful dental issues are resolved. We schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that healing is progressing well and to establish a preventive care program that keeps your dog’s teeth healthy in the long term.

How can I tell if my dog has dental problems?

Common signs include bad breath, reluctance to eat hard food, pawing at the mouth, excessive drooling, red or bleeding gums, and visible plaque or tartar buildup on teeth. Some dogs become quieter or less playful when dental pain affects them. If you notice any of these signs, or if your dog is due for a routine dental check, book an appointment at Vet HQ. Regular dental examinations catch problems early, preventing pain and more extensive treatment down the track.
