Real-Time Organ Visualisation, Painless Assessment

Ultrasound reveals soft tissue and organ detail impossible to see on radiographs. It’s completely painless, non-invasive, and often performed while you wait. We examine hearts, livers, kidneys, bladders, intestines, and reproductive organs in real-time, detecting disease early and monitoring conditions precisely.

Our veterinarians hold advanced qualifications in imaging, enabling detailed ultrasound assessment at both Darlinghurst and Double Bay. Most pets stay relaxed throughout examination, particularly when handled by familiar veterinarians and nurses they already know.

What Ultrasound Reveals

Abdominal Ultrasound:

  • Organ structure and size (liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, intestines, stomach)
  • Masses or tumours within organs
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
  • Bladder stones or thickened bladder wall
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Intestinal wall thickness or abnormal layering
  • Gallbladder abnormalities
  • Pregnancy and foetal development

Echocardiography (Cardiac Ultrasound):

  • Heart chamber size and wall thickness
  • Valve function and abnormalities
  • Blood flow through the heart
  • Fluid around heart (pericardial effusion)
  • Cardiac masses or blood clots

How Ultrasound Works

We apply gel to your pet’s skin (the gel improves sound wave transmission), then move a probe across the area being examined. High-frequency sound waves create real-time images displayed on a monitor. The procedure is painless – most pets tolerate it calmly with gentle restraint.

Hair may need to be clipped for optimal image quality, particularly for abdominal ultrasound, where fur can interfere with sound wave transmission.

Most pets lie comfortably on padded examination tables. Ultrasound requires skill and experience for accurate interpretation. Our imaging-qualified veterinarians perform and interpret studies, recognising normal variations from pathological changes that require intervention.

Immediate Results, Clear Communication

We review ultrasound findings in real-time, often displaying images during the examination and explaining what we’re seeing. You’ll understand findings before leaving the appointment, enabling same-day treatment decisions for many conditions.

For complex cases, we can arrange external specialist radiologist review of recorded images, typically receiving detailed reports within 24-48 hours. This collaborative approach ensures diagnostic accuracy when cases warrant additional expert interpretation.

When Ultrasound Works Best

Ultrasound excels at visualising soft tissue structures and fluid. It’s ideal for:

  • Investigating vomiting, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain
  • Detecting masses or tumours in abdominal organs
  • Monitoring kidney disease progression
  • Confirming pregnancy and assessing foetal health
  • Evaluating heart function and structure
  • Guiding needle biopsies or fluid aspiration

Ultrasound cannot visualise bones, air-filled structures, or detect small changes in organ tissue composition that appear normal on ultrasound but are diseased microscopically. Some conditions require additional diagnostic tests (radiography, CT scans, biopsy) for a complete assessment.

Calm Environment Improves Quality

Anxious pets don’t hold still well, which compromises image quality. Our familiar environment and gentle handling approach help keep patients relaxed, resulting in better diagnostic images with reduced stress. This is one advantage of receiving ultrasound from veterinarians and nurses your pet already knows and trusts.

Best Vet Clinic! Oh My Gosh, I owe these guys everything, if it wasn’t for this clinic, I wouldn’t have my WylieCat anymore.
My cat fell out a window, 6 storeys down to concrete, & although he didn’t break bones, he broke his insides, especially his liver. The dedication of care…

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

Does ultrasound hurt?

No. Ultrasound is completely painless. The probe contacts your pet’s skin gently, and the sound waves are imperceptible. Most pets tolerate examination calmly with gentle restraint. Some anxious pets benefit from mild sedation to help them relax, but sedation isn’t routinely necessary for cooperative patients.

Why does my pet need an ultrasound if they already had X-rays?

Radiographs and ultrasound provide complementary information. X-rays show bones and general organ size/position. Ultrasound reveals internal organ structure, blood flow, and soft tissue detail invisible on radiographs. Many conditions require the use of both imaging modalities for a complete assessment. Your vet recommends the diagnostics most likely to provide answers for your pet’s specific symptoms.

How quickly are results available?

Immediately for most cases. We perform examinations, review images in real-time, and discuss the findings with you before you leave. For complex cases warranting external specialist radiologist review, detailed reports typically arrive within 24-48 hours. You’ll leave knowing our interpretation and preliminary findings, even when we’re arranging additional expert review.

Can ultrasound detect all abdominal problems?

No. Ultrasound excels at visualising organs and masses but has limitations. It cannot reliably detect mild intestinal inflammation, early kidney or liver disease with normal organ appearance, small foreign objects, or conditions requiring microscopic tissue examination. Some diagnoses require combining ultrasound with other tests (blood work, radiography, endoscopy, biopsy).

Do I need to prepare my pet for an ultrasound?

For abdominal ultrasound, fasting (typically 8-12 hours) helps reduce gas in the intestines, thereby improving image quality. For cardiac ultrasound, no preparation is needed. We’ll provide specific instructions when scheduling your appointment. Bring your pet’s regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise.

What if an ultrasound finds something unexpected?

We discuss all findings honestly, including incidental discoveries. Ultrasound sometimes reveals conditions unrelated to your initial concern. We explain our findings, discuss their clinical significance, recommend appropriate next steps (which may include biopsy, additional imaging, treatment, or monitoring), and provide cost estimates for any recommended follow-up.
