Laboratory Services

Hospital-Grade Diagnostics, Same-Day Results

Our in-house laboratory delivers results within hours for comprehensive blood work, urinalysis, cytology, and urgent diagnostics. This speed transforms treatment – instead of sending samples externally and waiting 24-48 hours, we diagnose and begin therapy during your visit.

For sick pets, that immediacy can be lifesaving. For preventative care, it catches disease before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective and least expensive.

In-House Laboratory Capabilities

Comprehensive Chemistry Panel:

  • Kidney function (creatinine, BUN, SDMA)
  • Liver enzymes and function
  • Blood sugar (glucose)
  • Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride)
  • Total protein and albumin
  • Pancreatic enzymes

Complete Blood Count:

  • Red blood cell levels (detecting anaemia)
  • White blood cell counts (detecting infection or immune disorders)
  • Platelet numbers (assessing clotting ability)

Urinalysis:

  • Kidney function assessment
  • Bladder infection detection
  • Diabetes screening
  • Protein loss detection

Additional Testing:

  • Blood clotting times
  • Thyroid hormone levels
  • Cortisol testing for adrenal disease
  • Emergency electrolyte testing
  • Cytology (microscopic examination of masses, fluids, or tissue samples)

Why Speed Matters

For Sick Pets:

Hours matter when pets are critically ill. Same-day results enable us to begin appropriate treatment immediately, correcting dehydration, addressing infection, and managing organ dysfunction, rather than waiting overnight or longer for external laboratory reports.

For Pre-Surgical Screening:

We assess organ function before anaesthesia, identifying concerns that might require adjustments to the anaesthetic protocol or procedure postponement. Same-day results enable us to proceed with scheduled procedures without delay when screening is regular or make informed decisions about timing if abnormalities are detected.

For Monitoring Chronic Disease:

Pets on long-term medications or with conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism need regular monitoring. Same-visit results enable immediate medication adjustments, when necessary, rather than waiting days and then attempting to reach you with recommendations that require additional visits.

Hospital-Grade Equipment, Expert Interpretation

Our laboratory features equipment comparable to that used in human hospital settings – the same analysers used to process human samples in medical laboratories. We perform internal quality control, participate in external quality assurance programmes, and calibrate equipment regularly to ensure accuracy.

Results are interpreted in the context of each pet’s history, symptoms, and physical examination findings. Numbers alone don’t tell complete stories – experienced clinical judgment combined with accurate testing creates diagnoses you can trust.

External Reference Laboratory

Some tests require external reference laboratories, including specific hormone panels, advanced infectious disease testing, genetic tests, histopathology (microscopic tissue examination), and other advanced diagnostics. Results typically return within 24–48 hours, though some tests may take longer.

We explain which tests are processed in-house versus externally when recommending diagnostics, so you understand result timeframes.

Proactive Health Screening

Laboratory testing isn’t just for sick pets. Annual blood work for adult pets and twice-yearly for seniors detects disease before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective and affordable.

We catch kidney disease, liver dysfunction, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other conditions early, often years before clinical signs develop. Early intervention consistently delivers better outcomes, lower treatment costs, and more years of good health together.

Best Vet Clinic! Oh My Gosh, I owe these guys everything, if it wasn’t for this clinic, I wouldn’t have my WylieCat anymore.
My cat fell out a window, 6 storeys down to concrete, & although he didn’t break bones, he broke his insides, especially his liver. The dedication of care…

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

Why does pre-anaesthetic blood work matter if my pet seems healthy?

Many conditions affecting anaesthetic safety (kidney dysfunction, liver disease, clotting disorders, and anaemia) often show no visible symptoms in their early stages. Pre-operative screening detects hidden problems, allowing us to adjust anaesthetic protocols for safety or postpone procedures if organ dysfunction requires stabilisation first. It significantly reduces anaesthetic risk.

How much does laboratory testing cost?

Costs vary depending on the tests required. Basic pre-anaesthetic screening differs from comprehensive disease investigation panels. We provide estimates before performing testing and explain why each test is recommended, allowing you to make informed decisions about diagnostics within your budget.

Can you run tests on samples from other vets?

Generally, yes, for samples that store well (blood, urine). Some tests require fresh samples or specific collection methods. If your regular veterinarian has obtained samples but you prefer testing at our laboratory, please get in touch with us to discuss whether the samples are suitable or if we need to collect fresh samples.

What if test results are abnormal?

We discuss all results honestly, explaining what abnormalities mean for your pet’s health. Some abnormalities require immediate treatment. Others need additional testing for a definitive diagnosis. Some are mild and warrant monitoring but not immediate intervention. We provide clear recommendations and explain the reasoning behind them, as well as any further diagnostic suggestions.

Do you offer health screening packages?

Yes, we offer age-appropriate wellness screening packages that combine blood work, urinalysis, and other diagnostics tailored to your pet’s life stage. These packages provide comprehensive health assessments at a more affordable price than individual tests. Learn about our current wellness screening offerings from our team.

Why do some tests need to go to external laboratories?

Some tests, such as specific hormone panels, genetic testing, infectious disease panels, and tissue microscopy, require equipment and technical expertise beyond what’s practical for individual veterinary hospitals to maintain. External reference laboratories process thousands of samples daily, allowing them to offer these tests efficiently and cost-effectively. We work with reputable laboratories that maintain rigorous quality control and typically provide fast turnaround times.
