Endoscopy

Veterinary team performing an endoscopic procedure on a pet in a surgical suite, with monitors displaying internal camera images and vital signs.

Visualising Internal Structures Without Major Surgery

Endoscopy uses tiny cameras on flexible scopes to examine your pet’s stomach, airways, nasal passages, and upper intestines without major surgical incisions. We investigate persistent vomiting, retrieve foreign objects, obtain biopsies, and diagnose conditions that other tests haven’t explained – all while avoiding the trauma of exploratory surgery.

Most pets recover within hours and can go home the same day. It’s minimally invasive, providing definitive answers with significantly less pain and faster recovery than traditional surgical exploration.

What Endoscopy Can Accomplish

Gastroscopy (Stomach and Upper Intestine):

  • Investigate chronic vomiting or regurgitation
  • Retrieve foreign objects from the stomach or oesophagus
  • Obtain biopsies for diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or chronic gastritis
  • Examine the oesophagus for strictures, masses, or inflammation
  • Assess stomach lining for ulceration or tumours

Rhinoscopy (Nasal Passages):

  • Investigate chronic nasal discharge or sneezing
  • Identify foreign objects, masses, or fungal infections
  • Obtain biopsies from nasal masses
  • Visualise anatomical abnormalities affecting breathing

Bronchoscopy (Airways):

  • Investigate chronic cough or breathing difficulty
  • Obtain samples from airways for culture or cytology
  • Visualise tracheal collapse or masses
  • Retrieve foreign objects from airways (rare but possible)

The Procedure

Endoscopy requires general anaesthesia to keep pets still and comfortable while we navigate delicate instruments through internal structures. We insert the scope (a flexible tube with a camera and light at the tip) through natural openings, such as the mouth for gastroscopy and the nostrils for rhinoscopy.

High-resolution images display on monitors, allowing detailed visualisation of internal structures. We can direct instruments through the scope to obtain biopsies, retrieve objects, or collect samples without any external incisions.

Procedures typically take 20-60 minutes, depending on the nature of the investigation and whether we’re also collecting samples or retrieving objects.

What Endoscopy Cannot Do

Endoscopy has limitations. We cannot:

  • Retrieve all types of foreign objects (some are too large, too firmly lodged, or in locations beyond scope reach)
  • Visualise the entire gastrointestinal tract (we can access the stomach and upper small intestine, but not the mid-intestine or colon)
  • Obtain full-thickness biopsies needed for some diagnoses
  • Perform extensive surgical repairs through the scope

When endoscopy reveals conditions that require surgical intervention, or when objects cannot be retrieved endoscopically, we discuss traditional surgical options. Endoscopy often provides valuable information that guides surgical planning, even when it doesn’t completely resolve the problem.

Recovery and Results

Most pets wake comfortably within 30-60 minutes of procedure completion. They can typically go home the same day, once they are alert and steady on their feet. Throat soreness from gastroscopy usually resolves within 24 hours. Most pets return to normal eating habits by the next day.

We review endoscopic findings with you immediately, showing you images captured during the procedure. Biopsy results from samples sent to external laboratories typically return within 5-7 days, at which point we contact you to discuss findings and treatment recommendations.

When Traditional Surgery Remains Necessary

Not every case benefits from an endoscopic approach. Intestinal foreign objects beyond the reach of the scope, perforated intestines, extensive masses, or conditions requiring full-thickness biopsies need traditional surgery.

We’ll recommend the most appropriate diagnostic approach for your pet’s specific situation. Sometimes, that may involve endoscopy, traditional surgery, or a combination of both, as needed in sequence. The goal is to achieve an accurate diagnosis using the least invasive approach that provides sufficient information.

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

Can endoscopy be used to remove all foreign objects?

Not all, but many. We successfully retrieve objects from the stomach and oesophagus, including bones, toys, fabric, and other items. Objects that are too large, too sharp, or have moved into the intestines typically require traditional surgery. We assess each case individually and discuss the likelihood of successful endoscopic retrieval based on object type, size, and location.

Is endoscopy painful for my pet?

Endoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia, so your pet experiences no pain during the procedure. Mild throat soreness from gastroscopy typically resolves within 24 hours. Most pets are comfortable and eating normally the day after the procedure. It’s significantly less painful than exploratory surgery requiring abdominal incisions.

How long does my pet stay in the hospital?

Most endoscopy patients go home the same day, typically 2-4 hours after the procedure, once they’re alert, steady, and comfortable. Some cases requiring extensive biopsies or concurrent treatments may necessitate an overnight stay, but same-day discharge is typically the standard for straightforward diagnostic endoscopies.

What if endoscopy doesn't find the problem?

Endoscopy provides valuable information even when it doesn’t reveal the complete diagnosis. If endoscopy is unremarkable but symptoms persist, we discuss next steps, which might include additional imaging (ultrasound, CT), traditional exploratory surgery, or trial treatments based on the most likely diagnoses. Sometimes, ruling out certain conditions through endoscopy narrows our diagnostic focus usefully.

How much does an endoscopy cost compared to surgery?

Endoscopy typically costs less than exploratory surgery because it requires shorter anaesthesia time, no surgical incisions, and faster recovery. However, if endoscopy doesn’t solve the problem and surgery becomes necessary, you will have incurred both costs. We discuss cost-benefit considerations for your specific situation, helping you make informed decisions about the diagnostic approach.

Do both Darlinghurst and Double Bay perform endoscopy?

Yes, endoscopic capabilities are available at both locations. We have the advanced equipment and trained veterinarians to perform gastroscopy, rhinoscopy, and bronchoscopy at both practices, providing convenient access across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
