Alternative Medicine

Complementary Approaches, Evidence-Based Application

Veterinary acupuncture, therapeutic laser, and integrative nutrition complement conventional treatment by addressing pain, supporting healing, and improving quality of life. We’re not replacing modern veterinary medicine; we’re expanding it with evidence-based complementary modalities.

Chronic pain, osteoarthritis, post-surgical recovery, and age-related decline often respond well to alternative approaches used alongside traditional treatment. Our veterinarians receive advanced training in these techniques, ensuring safe, appropriate application that genuinely helps pets feel better.

Modalities We Offer

Veterinary Acupuncture:

Involves precise needle placement at specific anatomical points to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Particularly effective for osteoarthritis, back pain, and chronic conditions that don’t fully resolve with medication alone. Most pets tolerate treatment well, often relaxing during sessions.

Therapeutic Laser:

Uses specific wavelengths of light to reduce inflammation, accelerate tissue healing, and provide drug-free pain relief. Beneficial for surgical wounds, chronic ear infections, arthritis, and soft tissue injuries. Non-invasive, painless, and takes only minutes per session.

Integrative Nutrition:

Recognises that diet affects inflammation, energy levels, cognitive function, and overall health. We assess individual nutritional needs and recommend dietary modifications that support treatment goals, whether managing kidney disease, reducing inflammatory conditions, or supporting healthy aging.

How Alternative Medicine Fits with Conventional Treatment

These modalities work alongside, not instead of, evidence-based veterinary medicine. A dog recovering from cruciate surgery benefits from both appropriate pain medication AND therapeutic laser to accelerate healing. A cat with chronic kidney disease requires medical management AND nutritional support. An arthritic senior dog improves with both anti-inflammatory medication AND regular acupuncture.

We integrate approaches thoughtfully, using each where it provides genuine benefit. This isn’t about choosing between conventional and alternative medicine; it’s about combining them intelligently to optimise outcomes.

Individual Response Varies

No treatment (conventional or alternative) works identically for every patient. Some senior dogs gain remarkable mobility improvement with regular acupuncture. Others show a modest response. Some wounds heal noticeably faster with laser therapy. Others progress at typical rates.

We assess each patient individually, design protocols tailored to their specific needs, carefully monitor their response, and adjust our approaches based on the observed outcomes. If a modality isn’t providing benefit after an appropriate trial, we’ll honestly tell you and modify the plan.

Realistic Expectations

Alternative therapies aren’t miracle cures. They’re additional tools that can meaningfully improve comfort and function when used appropriately.

Benefits typically include:

  • Reduced pain, allowing lower medication doses
  • Improved mobility in arthritic patients
  • Faster tissue healing post-surgery or injury
  • Better quality of life for geriatric patients
  • Support for pets who can’t tolerate full medication doses due to organ dysfunction

These are valuable improvements, but they’re incremental rather than transformative. We combine modalities strategically to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet’s specific situation.

Suitable for Senior Pets

Alternative therapies are often ideal for older pets who can’t tolerate full medication doses due to declining kidney or liver function. Acupuncture, laser therapy, and nutritional support provide non-pharmaceutical ways to manage pain and support quality of life when medication options are limited.

Many of our senior patients in Double Bay, Bondi Junction, and surrounding areas experience improved mobility, comfort, and engagement through regular alternative therapy combined with appropriate conventional care.

FAQs for our Vet HQ Family

Is veterinary acupuncture actually effective?

Veterinary acupuncture has substantial evidence supporting its effectiveness for pain management, particularly for osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Studies have demonstrated measurable improvements in mobility and a reduction in pain markers. It’s not a placebo effect; pets show objective functional improvements. However, individual response varies, and acupuncture works best as part of comprehensive pain management rather than as a sole treatment.

How quickly can I expect to see results from alternative therapies?

Response timeframe varies by condition and modality. Laser therapy often shows effects within 2-3 treatments. Acupuncture may require 3-4 sessions before noticeable improvement is observed. Nutritional interventions work gradually over weeks to months. We assess your pet’s response throughout treatment and adjust protocols based on their progress.

Do I need a referral for alternative medicine services?

No referral needed. You can book alternative medicine consultations directly at Darlinghurst or Double Bay. We’ll assess whether these approaches suit your pet’s condition and integrate them with ongoing conventional treatment when appropriate.

Can alternative medicine replace my pet's medications?

Sometimes yes, often no. For some patients, successful acupuncture or laser therapy allows for a reduction in medication doses. For others, alternative therapies supplement medication rather than replacing it. We never discontinue necessary medications without medical justification and monitoring. The goal is optimal comfort using whatever combination of approaches works best for your individual pet.

How often does my pet need alternative therapy treatments?

Treatment frequency depends on the condition being treated and the individual’s response. Acupuncture typically begins with weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks, then the frequency is reduced as improvement occurs. Laser therapy typically requires 2-3 sessions per week initially, decreasing as the healing progresses. We adjust frequency based on your pet’s response and maintenance needs.

Are alternative therapies suitable for all pets?

Most pets tolerate alternative therapies well. Acupuncture requires pets to sit relatively still for 10-20 minutes; however, some extremely anxious or aggressive pets may not be suitable candidates. Laser therapy is effective for virtually all patients, as it’s quick and non-invasive. Nutritional interventions benefit most pets but must be tailored to concurrent health conditions. We assess suitability during initial consultation.
